About this work
A creature's head with a pointed snout, small dark eye and red tongue sits at the center of looping, interlaced gold ribbons decorated with dots, triangles and scale-like patterns. A red medallion with a fan-shaped emblem breaks the swirl just below center, while the ornamental bands radiate outward to the edges of the canvas.
Deep teal, blue-green and near-black tones replace a warmer palette elsewhere in the same series, giving the gold ornamental scrollwork a cooler, submerged feel. Fine incised linework and small inlaid patches of red and metal catch the light against the textured ground, producing a dense, talisman-like design.
