About this work
Four deckled sheets of handmade paper, densely patterned in emerald, ochre, teal and rust, fill the corners of a black field; small labels read Lucas, Johannes and Marcus, naming three evangelists while the fourth panel stays unmarked. A raised gilt-metal cross with fine relief ornament divides the composition into quadrants.
Rough torn edges and layered pigment give the paper a woven, textile-like surface, its saturated tones set starkly against black and gleaming gold. Mixing oil, tempera and metal, the work reads as a symbolic relic rather than a picture, its fragmented imagery solemn, ornamental and enigmatic.
