About this work
A man's head appears beneath an exaggeratedly wide conical hat, its brim drawn with a few sweeping diagonal strokes that fan out like rays. The face is built from short, searching marks describing deep-set eyes, a furrowed brow, and a downturned mouth, giving the sketch a tired, weathered expression.
Executed rapidly in black ink on plain paper, the drawing relies on broken, scratchy line work and small pooled blots rather than shading to suggest volume. The economy of marks and the loose, unfinished quality of the hat's outline give the study an immediate, spontaneous character.
