About this work
A circular central scene shows a stout, hatted man leading a heavily laden pack animal while gripping a bearded companion by the collar, coins spilling from his open hand into a basket. Four smaller corner vignettes surround it: two groups of cloaked men in wide-brimmed hats conversing or arguing, a fallen figure lying prone, and two men grappling with each other.
Rendered entirely in black ink line on white paper, the composition relies on dense parallel hatching and cross-hatching to model faces, drapery and fur, typical of woodcut printmaking. The crowded, energetic figures and rough period costume give the sheet a lively, narrative, slightly comic tone suited to an illustrated tale.
