"From the series Velikiy Ustug"

A watercolor and ink sketch depicts an open sandy yard ringed by wooden apartment houses and a log cabin, with children and adults scattered across the ground - some walking, some crouching, one on a swing-like structure. Large close-up faces are inserted among the smaller distant figures, giving the composition a fragmented, collage-like feel. A playground slide stands at left.

Loose ink contours are washed over with patches of blue, ochre, green and red, leaving much of the paper bare. The handling is quick and spontaneous, sketch-like rather than finished, capturing the restless energy of a communal outdoor scene.
