About this work
The sheet carries two separate ink sketches. At left, a stout, balding man in a flat cap is drawn full-length from behind and in profile, hands driven into his coat pockets, one leg advanced as if walking. At upper right, a second head-and-shoulders study shows another figure with wavy hair and round glasses, a cigarette between the lips, gazing downward. No setting surrounds either figure.
Both studies are built from rapid, unbroken pen contours, with occasional ink blots marking buttons and shadow on otherwise bare paper. The loose, slightly caricatural line exaggerates the man's girth and stooped posture, giving the sketch a wry, observational humor typical of quick studies made from life.
