About this work
A head is bent forward and to the side, framed beneath a dark lattice of heavy diagonal beams or roof timbers; sparse white gaps mark a brow, nose and beard while the rest of the hair and surrounding structure dissolve into solid black.
Thick, dry-brushed black ink is dragged and scraped across cream paper, leaving broken, textured strokes with almost no mid-tones. The heavy shadow and cramped framing give the small sketch a brooding, closed-in mood despite its economy of means.
