About this work
Five seashells of differing shapes are lined up on a narrow ledge: a slender spiral, a spiky whelk, a smooth cowrie-like shell, a tall spindle shell, and a clawed murex, each turned to show its distinct silhouette. A patterned band along the bottom edge suggests waves or sand beneath the arrangement.
The shells are built up through fine, controlled crosshatching that renders their ridges, spines and glossy interiors with near-scientific precision, set against a mottled, atmospheric dark ground that recedes into soft grey haze. The contrast between crisp shell surfaces and the loose, textured background gives the still life a quiet, contemplative stillness.
