About this work
A classical marble head is shown in close profile, tilted back with eyes closed, nose and lips rendered in smooth curving planes. Thick, undulating locks of carved hair fall along the left side of the composition in parallel wavy ridges. Below the neck and shoulder the stone surface breaks down into loose vertical streaks that run to the bottom edge of the canvas, obscuring where the figure would continue.
Grey, white, and near-black tones model the marble in soft, blended gradations that suggest the sheen and shadow of carved stone. Toward the lower half the paint turns to long, dripping vertical marks, as if the image were washing or eroding away. The contrast between the carefully modeled head and the raw, streaked darkness beneath gives the piece a melancholic, dissolving quality.
