About this work
A pale face with heavy black fringe and dark, half-lowered eyes looks out from beneath a large, crumpled white ruff collar. Two round patches of orange rouge mark the cheeks and the mouth is painted a deep red, giving the sitter a masklike, theatrical clown character.
Worked in charcoal and white chalk over toned grey paper, with sienna used sparingly for the rouge and lips, the drawing relies on soft smudged shading for the skin and loose, energetic strokes for the hair and collar. The downcast gaze and pale mask-like face create a subdued, melancholic mood.
