About this work
A draped female statue is seen in three-quarter view, hair gathered in a loose knot, gaze turned to the side. Heavy folds of drapery fall across the shoulder and chest, and one arm rests bent across the lap, fingers closed around a carved bundle resembling wheat ears or a wreath. The figure emerges from complete darkness, with no setting or context indicated.
Painted entirely in grisaille - ivory, warm grey and umber - to mimic the surface of plaster or marble, with a single strong light modeling the drapery folds and facial planes in academic precision. Soft blending and visible brush texture in the shadows, isolated in the black void like a museum cast study, produce a hushed, contemplative stillness.
