About this work
A winged woman reclines with her body twisted so her head and raised, bird-holding hands are at the top while her legs stretch downward; her torso is overlaid with intricate floral scrollwork, carved miniature faces, and a large dragonfly. Ravens and sparrows perch on and grip her hands and shoulders, houseflies hover in the surrounding blank space, and an inverted bearded winged face appears near the bottom edge.
Rendered in fine black pen line and dense stippling on white paper, the drawing gives feathers, petals, and skin the same richly worked texture, with no color or tonal wash to soften the crowding. The symmetrical arrangement, repeated eyes and masks, and swarming insects produce an unsettling, dreamlike density.
