About this work
A young man with disheveled dark hair, a mustache, and light stubble looks down and to the side, his expression pensive and closed. The bust-length figure is rendered with dense cross-hatched pen lines that build up the volumes of the face and open collar, set against a loosely brushed violet-grey wash.
Fine black ink lines describe the features with graphic precision, while diagonal hatching fills the background and a stain of purple wash adds atmosphere to the sheet. The limited palette and visible paper tone give the drawing an intimate, unfinished immediacy typical of a study sketchbook page.
