About this work
A man's head and shoulders fill the canvas, turned slightly and lit from the front so strong light falls across forehead, nose, and cheekbones while the rest of the face sinks into shadow. He has long, unruly hair, a full beard, and heavy brows over deep-set eyes fixed on the viewer, wearing a loose pale garment against an undefined dark brown wall.
The palette is restricted to warm browns, ochres, and umbers against near-black shadow, with a touch of cool blue behind the head. Paint is built up thickly in broad strokes, the canvas texture showing through and the features roughed in rather than smoothed. The lighting is stark and theatrical, giving the face a brooding presence.
