About this work
A close-up portrait shows a man's head and shoulders emerging from a near-black background, his short dark hair and stubble rendered in a few broad passages. He looks straight out at the viewer with a level, unsmiling expression, deep shadow pooling in the eye sockets and along the jaw.
Thick, palette-knife-like strokes of ochre, rust and umber build the lit half of the face against murky greens and browns in the background, with touches of blue at the collar. The heavy impasto and stark tonal contrast give the portrait an intense, brooding presence.
