About this work
A close-up portrait of an older man's head, deeply lined and bearded, is interwoven with two long-beaked wading birds whose bodies and wings curl around the crown and side of the skull. Thin, twisting tendril-like lines stand in for hair, spreading outward and downward across the sheet, while a clawed foot emerges near the lower edge.
Executed entirely in fine stippled dots and hatched ink lines, the drawing builds deep tonal contrast between the shadowed beard and hair and the stark white of the paper.
