Mermaid

A female figure with flowing hair lies at the center of the sheet, her body and hair merging into an overwhelming tangle of fish, birds, insects, roots, hands, and miniature human faces that fill the upper two-thirds of the composition. A tiny figure plays an accordion at upper left, a large sunflower and dragonfly-like insect appear at upper right, and fish of every size ring the lower border while a fish tail curls beneath the reclining body.

Executed entirely in fine black pen line and dense stippling on white paper, the drawing builds volume and texture through hatching alone, giving skin, scales, and feathers a uniformly intricate surface. The obsessive layering of small motifs and recurring staring eyes create a crowded, hallucinatory atmosphere that rewards close, slow looking.
