About this work
A large reclining nude body fills the sheet, one leg lifted and toes pointed at the upper left, a breast rendered with a soft pink wash at the centre. Where the head would be, two bearded, grotesque male faces appear side by side, their features distorted into caricature, staring out toward the viewer while a mass of dark scribbled hair spills at the right.
Fine continuous ink contours describe the body's outline while a pale rose wash is brushed over the torso, leaving the grotesque faces in denser, more agitated linework. The contrast between the calm, sinuous body line and the caricatured faces gives the sheet an unsettling, mysterious quality.
