About this work
A cluster of costumed carnival figures gathers at the base of a shadowy, golden-streaked space: veiled and feathered characters stand shoulder to shoulder, one beating a small drum, while a grinning jester mask with a tall pointed cap looms in the lower right corner. Above them, disembodied masks and skull-like faces seem to float in the murky upper register.
Built up in pastel with heavy vertical hatching, the palette moves from cool violet-gray at the edges to streaked ochre and gold at center, giving the surface a feverish, rain-like shimmer. Forms are rubbed and layered rather than outlined, dissolving costume into face, and the crowding of grotesque masks against the glowing backdrop creates an unsettling, carnival-nightmare mood.
