About this work
A pale, shaven-headed woman kneels wrapped almost entirely in a heavy blue drapery whose surface is broken into sharp, crystalline facets; only her face, neck, one shoulder and a bare foot emerge from the fabric. She lifts one hand, fingers open, toward a loose cluster of small dark flecks scattering across the upper left of an otherwise bare, sandy-gold ground.
The warm ochre and umber background is scraped and scumbled into a rough, granular texture, against which the cool, angular blue of the cloak reads as a hard, almost mineral form. Smooth, carefully modeled flesh painting contrasts with the faceted drapery and dry surrounding surface, giving the scene a quiet, enigmatic stillness.
