About this work
A bust-length figure faces forward, her head slightly tilted, auburn hair framing a pale oval face with faintly indicated eyes, nose and mouth. Rounded shoulders, wrapped in a light garment, fade into the surrounding field so that only the head holds any real definition. The pose is frontal and still, without props or setting, isolating the sitter against an undefined, luminous space.
Thick, choppy strokes of the palette knife build the surface in close-value pastels — sage, lilac, cream and rust — so figure and ground share the same broken texture. Light seems to come from everywhere at once, flattening contrast and softening the features until they read as presence more than likeness, giving the portrait a hazy, dreamlike quality.
