About this work

A weathered ochre rock formation juts into the sea on the right, its base lapped by small breaking waves, while a lone white-sailed boat drifts near the pale horizon. The composition is built around this diagonal cliff, contrasting the solid earth-toned mass against the wide, luminous expanse of calm water and sky.

The palette moves from soft lavender-gray sky and sea to warm ochre, rust and olive on the rock and shore, unified by a hazy midday light. Loose, visible brushstrokes and thick dabs of paint capture reflections and foam with quick impressionist touches, giving the small scene an airy, sun-warmed calm.
