About this work
Tall blades of grass and reed catch bright light along the bottom edge of the composition, growing from a narrow strip of green bank. Behind them fills a dark expanse of water, its surface broken into patches of ochre, olive, and violet-blue reflections and ripples.
The close, cropped view has no horizon, concentrating attention on the play of light on water and the crisp silhouettes of the grass blades, built with quick, calligraphic strokes of pale green and white against the darker ground. Warm and cool tones interweave to give the small study a bright, flickering, sun-dappled mood.
