About this work
A table draped in a patterned cloth holds a halved melon, a green apple, a quince-like pear, a glass bottle and a tall ceramic pitcher filled with white daisy-like blooms. Seashells, pebbles and eggs are scattered near the fruit, while the backdrop opens onto a beach and turquoise sea where a small girl in a yellow hat walks away from the viewer.
A single warm golden wash unifies foreground and background alike, so sand, water and clouds share the same honeyed tone. The melon's rind is built up with thick, textured strokes, while the sky and sea are laid in smoother, softer passages, producing a hazy, dreamlike calm that blurs the boundary between still life and landscape.
