About this work
A figure lies flat on a bed, head resting on a pillow and turned to one side with a tired, distant gaze. A heavy blanket, built up in thick sculpted folds, covers the body from the chest down, with only the hands emerging limply at the sides against the plain sheet.
The palette is almost monochrome, muted greys and beige broken only by the warm tone of the face and hands. Thick impasto ridges give the blanket a sculptural, almost plaster-like relief, while flat, even light keeps the mood subdued and clinical, evoking isolation, fatigue and quiet confinement to a sickbed.
