About this work
On a light, sandy terrace beside the sea, a boy grips an overhead bar and pulls himself up, seen from behind; beside him rises a taller ladder-like frame of orange-red poles and diagonal braces. A low railing marks the terrace's edge, with a flat horizon separating the pale sea from the sky above.
Warm rust oranges and reds of the metal framework play against cool blues of sea, sky and the long shadow cast across the ground. Paint is applied in light, translucent washes over a pale ground, with the figure and railing sketched in loose, pencil-like line. The fluid handling and visible paper texture give the scene a sun-bleached feel.
