About this work
A cluster of monastery buildings is arranged in receding perspective along a low stone wall: a yellow-domed cathedral with arched windows in the foreground, a white bell tower with a dark pyramidal roof beside it, and smaller whitewashed churches with tented domes further back. A dark-robed figure walks along the path in front, and a stone wall with a tower closes the left side of the grounds.
Pale creams, ochre and grey-green tones are set against a soft, overcast sky, with the wide green lawn in front rendered in loose, blended strokes of yellow-green. Architectural details are drawn with more precision than the sky or grass, giving the composition a calm, orderly stillness fitting a monastic setting.
