Evening prayer in Diveevo monastery (etude)

A crowd of worshippers, women in headscarves, children and a few men, crosses the open square in front of a large white cathedral with gilded onion domes. A second, smaller church with its gold dome and bell tower stands further back to the left, and two dark spruce trees flank the cathedral's entrance, where an icon glows above the open doorway.

Low evening sun rakes across the white masonry, picking out carved arches and cornices in warm ochre light while the domes flare gold against a cooling lavender-blue sky. The figures are rendered in loose, dark silhouetted strokes that animate the foreground without individual detail. The warm glow against the darkening sky gives the scene a hushed, contemplative, devotional mood.
