About this work

A cluster of roses in cream, pale yellow and soft pink, with dark green leaves, rises from a light-colored vase set near the bottom edge of the canvas. The blooms overlap loosely without a fixed outline, and the vase itself is only summarized in a few pale strokes. The surrounding space is an even, textured field with no other objects or setting indicated.

Color is kept soft and close in value - creams, blush pinks and pale greens against a warm grey ground - with almost no strong contrast. Paint is dragged across the surface in short, hatched, crisscrossing strokes that give the whole canvas a woven, textile-like texture. The muted tonality and diffused light lend the still life a quiet, faded, dreamlike softness.
