About this work
On a white tablecloth lit by strong daylight, a tall white pitcher stands between a footed bowl heaped with green and dark purple grapes and a smaller footed dish holding red jam with a spoon. A folded white napkin with a knife and fork rests in the foreground, all arranged against a softly striped backdrop.
The composition is built almost entirely in whites, pale grays, and violet-blue shadows, with the grapes and jam supplying the only saturated color notes. Loose, confident brushstrokes describe form through light rather than line, and the cool cast shadows read as reflected sky. The effect is bright, airy, and quietly contemplative.
