About this work
Thick clusters of green reeds and overhanging foliage fill the upper two-thirds of the canvas, with a warm golden glow breaking through a gap in the greenery at the center. Below, the same growth is mirrored in a band of still river water rendered in blue, violet, and white, its surface broken by soft ripples and streaks of reflected light.
The greenery is built up with thick, dragged palette-knife strokes in varied greens, olive, and touches of ochre, while the water below is handled more fluidly in cool blues and lavender with bright white highlights. The contrast between the dense, textured bank and the calm, luminous water gives the scene a quiet, secluded, sun-dappled atmosphere.
