About this work

A figure lies stretched out on bare ground at the base of a stand of tall, thin pine and birch trunks, wrapped in a heavy orange cloth or blanket that falls in loose folds over the legs. One hand is raised close to the face while the head rests back, the pose suggesting quiet repose in the shade of the trees.

Thick, loaded brushstrokes render the trees in glowing yellow and white light above a dark, shadowed foreground where the figure lies, the bright orange drapery the picture's strongest note of color. The rough impasto and strong tonal contrast between the sunlit canopy and dim ground give the scene a hushed, dreamlike quality.
