About this work
A tight cluster of heavily cloaked, hooded figures gathers on a rocky rise, their faces mostly hidden within deep folds of drapery. One figure cradles a sleeping infant against a shoulder while a bald companion looks on; a sheep lies curled at their feet and an upright spear marks the edge of the group.
The charcoal is built up in dense, overlapping strokes that turn the cloaks into heavy, sculptural masses, their creases catching sharp light against the pale, empty paper above. Faces are left comparatively soft and underworked, keeping the identities ambiguous, while the huddled composition and muted grey tonality create a hushed, protective, slightly somber atmosphere.
