About this work
An elderly man with a full white beard and a black skullcap is shown close up, head and shoulders filling the frame. His heavily creased forehead, deep-set eyes and weathered skin are rendered in careful detail, and he wears a tan robe draped over a dark coat, one ear and side of the face caught in shadow.
Built with confident, visible brushstrokes, the pale blue-grey background is loosely scumbled while the face carries thicker, more sculptural paint that models bone structure and wrinkles through warm and cool contrasts. Strong directional light from one side carves out the features and casts the opposite cheek into shadow, giving the sitter a grave, dignified presence.
