About this work
A dense crowd fills the canvas: helmeted riot officers in visored gear press in from both sides around a bare-headed young man who stands calm at the center, hands raised slightly. Around him, people shout, film the scene on phones and cameras, and in the foreground a person is pinned down and restrained on the ground.
The entire composition is drenched in a single deep red, with only occasional flashes of white and blue breaking the monochrome wash. Loose, painterly brushwork blurs faces into the crowd while the central figure is rendered with sharper focus, building a charged, confrontational mood of mass tension, unrest and impending violence.
