About this work
A wide river flows toward a flat stone bridge with several low arches, spanned in the middle distance beneath a dense cluster of pastel buildings, towers and a hillside. Buildings continue along the left bank into the foreground, while the river's calm surface carries faint reflections of the bridge and town.
Soft blues, lilacs, pinks and ochres are laid in with quick, broken strokes and thin washes, keeping detail summary rather than precise. Diffuse light under a pale, clouded sky gives the whole view a gentle, atmospheric hush, as if seen through haze.
