About this work

A ballerina sits with one leg crossed over the other, both feet pointed and wrapped in dark leg warmers over her pointe shoes. She wears a dark fitted leotard and a barely sketched tutu, her hands clasped loosely in her lap as she looks down in quiet concentration.

Rendered almost entirely in grey and white tonal washes on bare paper, the drawing contrasts a tightly modeled face and hands with loosely brushed, unfinished passages in the skirt and background. The economy of line and soft shading give the figure a still, contemplative mood typical of a study from life.
