About this work
A young shepherd in a red cloak and Phrygian cap stands at right, an apple held out on his palm, with sheep and a jug at his feet. Facing him are three women: one wears a plumed helmet and carries a round shield, the other two stand nude beneath a billowing blue drape, one lifting fabric above her head, with sandals and a fleece scattered in the underbrush.
Warm amber light filters through the trees, picking out flesh tones and burnished armor against a deep green-black woodland. The paint is smooth and tightly rendered, its crisp highlights on skin, metal and cloth giving the scene a polished, staged quality despite the wooded setting.
