About this work
Dense masses of autumn foliage in saturated orange and yellow fill the upper two-thirds of the canvas, glowing above a low village of dark wooden houses and rooftops; a single figure in white walks along a path between the buildings at the base of the composition.
Thick, textured strokes build the tree canopy into a wall of warm color that contrasts sharply with the deep green-black shadows of the houses and foreground, rendered with loose, impressionistic touches rather than fine detail. The strong light-dark contrast and radiant color give the village a hushed, glowing intensity at the close of the day.
