About this work
A group of umbrella pines with twisting reddish-brown trunks rises from between large pale boulders, seen from below so their flattened, wind-shaped crowns spread laterally against the sky. Low shrubs and grass fill the gaps among the rocks in the foreground, with no horizon or distant view beyond the trees.
Saturated cobalt and turquoise fill the sky, contrasted with warm ochre and pink-toned stone and dark green foliage. Broken, textured brushstrokes describe bark and rock surfaces; the strong contrast between cool sky and warm rock gives a bright, sun-baked, southern feel.
