About this work
A pale, whitened Pierrot occupies the center of the vertical sheet, a wide floppy hat shading downcast eyes and a chalky, expressionless face. The loose ivory blouse and trousers wrap an angled, slightly stooped body that leans against a tall vertical staff running the full height of the picture.
Built up in pastel over a flat violet-indigo ground, heavy black contour lines pin down the drooping silhouette while dry, scumbled strokes leave the paper's tooth visible throughout. The narrow palette of ivory against deep purple, broken only by a scratched pink mark in one corner, gives the motionless clown a hushed, melancholic isolation.
