About this work
A woman sits huddled on a low seat, wrapped almost entirely in a heavy dark garment streaked with cobalt blue. Her head tilts down and to the side, face partly shadowed, while her clasped hands and bare feet emerge pale from the surrounding darkness.
The palette is dominated by near-black browns and blues, broken only by the pale flesh of the hands, feet and face. Thick, slashing strokes build the drapery into rough ridges of paint, while the face is worked more softly, creating a brooding, sorrowful atmosphere.
