About this work
The composition frames a narrow view between two flanking building walls, opening onto a dense sweep of Parisian rooftops descending toward a hazy skyline. Chimneys, dormer windows and slate and tile roofs interlock in a tight mosaic, with a slender tower and a pale domed basilica rising faintly on the horizon.
Thick impasto strokes, applied with a palette knife, build the rooftops into a mosaic of ochre, rose, grey and blue patches, while the flanking walls are rendered in flatter tan and grey tones. The muted, hazy sky and soft edges give the view an overcast, contemplative stillness, typical of a rooftop vista glimpsed from a high window.
