About this work
Two massive weathered stone columns of a colonnade fill the right side of the canvas, framing a view onto an open square beyond. Two ornate cast-iron lampposts stand on the wet pavement, small national flags flutter on distant poles, and a scatter of parked cars and low buildings recede toward a hazy, pale horizon.
Muted greys and warm stone tones dominate the palette, with only the reddish flags and a hint of green trees breaking the overcast monotony. The massive columns are rendered with broad, flat strokes, while the distant square is loosely sketched in soft touches of paint, lending the composition a quiet, weathered, contemplative stillness.
