About this work
The Doge's Palace's patterned pink-and-white facade and Gothic arcade fill the left side of the canvas, while an ornate iron lamppost and the tall column topped by the winged lion of Venice stand in the foreground. Across the lagoon, the campanile and domes of San Giorgio Maggiore rise through a soft haze, and a few strolling figures and gondolas dot the sunlit pavement and shoreline.
Pale lavender-grays and warm ochre tones dominate, with the morning light diffused through hazy clouds so that the distant skyline seems to dissolve. Broad, economical brushwork defines the architecture, while the pavement and water are rendered with loose horizontal strokes, giving the whole scene a quiet, misty stillness.
