About this work
A lone figure in a dark coat walks across an open stone plaza in the foreground, dwarfed by an ornate Gothic building whose facade is lined with pointed, trefoil-arched niches sheltering carved statues. To the right, an arcade with a deep red awning and a glinting stained-glass window recedes into shadow, framing the sunlit open space.
Warm ochres, creams and rust tones dominate, set off by cool passages of teal and violet in the shadows, all built up with quick, broken brushstrokes that catch the dappled midday light on stone. The loose handling and bright pavement give the scene an airy, unhurried calm.
