About this work
A large-leaved rubber plant in a terracotta pot fills the left and center of a tabletop still life, beside a tall brass-and-glass hookah with a coiled hose, small bottles, and a lime on the right. Mounted on the wall behind are a carved wooden African mask and a brightly painted picture showing a reclining figure in a turban and another seated figure, both rendered in a flat, stylized manner.
Deep greens of the foliage play against warm ochre, brass, and maroon tones, with patches of turquoise and red enlivening the background panel. Loose, textured brushwork and strong color contrasts across the plant, vessels, and wall picture give the still life a rich, decorative energy.
