About this work
An elderly man with a thick white beard and moustache stares directly out from beneath a dark flat cap, his weathered face rendered with deep-set, watery blue eyes as the only touch of color. He is enclosed within a hand-drawn black rectangular frame set against a stained, sepia-toned ground, with a second frame fragment visible below.
The image is built in grisaille - greys, browns and off-whites - with the paper left visibly aged and speckled, streaked by drips and spatters of paint that run down from the frame lines. The rough, graphic handling and staring gaze give the face an intense, weathered presence.
