About this work
A weathered brown leather jacket is draped over the back of a wooden stool, its sleeve slipping toward the floor. Behind it stands an easel holding a framed canvas in which a faint human head is dimly visible. The room is bare, its walls streaked with warm, mottled plaster tones.
Ochre, umber and sienna dominate, scumbled and dragged across the canvas to build a rough, textured wall behind the dark shapes of jacket and easel. Light falls from the upper left, picking out the jacket's folds and the pale glow of the framed head while the rest sinks into shadow. The mood is quiet and faintly unsettling, charged with an unseen presence.
