About this work
In the upper register, three nude women move in a dance-like arrangement against a deep blue ground, arms raised and legs bent, with a small spotted dog between them and a leafy vine border framing the scene. Below, separated by a band of foliage, a large bearded man's face and one raised hand emerge from a tangle of leaves, eyes looking directly outward.
Figures are modeled in warm flesh tones against saturated cobalt and turquoise grounds, with the vine border picked out in soft greens. The panel is worked in thick relief, giving contours and leaves a carved, sculptural presence, and the contrast between the light dance above and the fixed stare below gives the scene a quietly mysterious mood.
